Meet the Dannijo girls….Danielle and Jodie.I’ve been a fan of their jewelry for quite some time and was excited to meet them at their showrom in the Meatpacking district in NYC. Their jewelry is unique- every piece feels like a sculpture . Absolutely in love with the oxydised silver Kalbari necklace below. Chunky silver and colourful at the same time. Perfect match.
It can do wonders to any outfit, be it a summer long boho dress, jeans shirt and shorts decontracte look, a smart white blouse or a simple black dress. The combinations are endless…. wearing mine non stop- I only take it off when I sleep.
How did you get into jewelry making? We grew up in Jacksonville, FL by the beach. We were always really creative from a young age. Jodie used to make cool beaded jewelry and once I found my dad’s medical tools, I taught myself how to wirework. We started collaborating and our designs got more and more intricate. We sold to local boutiques and ultimately our hobby turned into a business.
How do you construct/make your pieces…
We have a very hands-on approach which is why the pieces can sometimes feel like sculptures! We lay out materials just like we did when we were kids and play with them until we come up with a killer design and then we work off the design and create a collection using it as a template for the rest. Jodie and I have very different styles – I tend to be a bit more bohemian-rock’n’roll inspired, whereas Jo has a more classic aesthetic, so DANNIJO designs are really eclectic and wearable by a range of personalities.
What materials do you use? We love oxidized metals – we do a lot of oxidized brass and oxidized silver. We also love pops of color so we infuse a lot of brightly colored chagrin, Swarovski elements, vintage beads/fabrics, turquoise, jade, aqua aura and African findings. We have this amazing snake vertebrae that I’m working with right now… Each season, we tell a new story, so we constantly use new materials to keep the line fresh and exciting for our clients. Our upcoming collection has a great assortment of semi precious stones in it.
Who wears your jewelry? Our friends all wear it so differently and it’s fun to see our pieces individualized. The collection is really eclectic so women of all ages were DANNIJO. The diversity of our celebrity clientele is really a testament to the range of our collection. Celebrity fans include Natalie Portman, Beyonce, Rihanna, Rosie Huntington Whitely, Katy Perry, Fergie, Claudia Shiffer, Oprah, Olivia Palermo and Charlize Theron.
Where can we buy your jewelry internationally? Netaporter, Lane Crawford, Harvey Nichols Hong Kong, Village Bicycle in London, Stylebop.com in Germany, Holt Renfrew in Canada
What inspires you?
Danielle -MUSIC!! I love going to music festivals and shows because they’re always so inspiring – there is so much style between the musicians and the fans – it’s stimulation overload at its best.
Jodie- We also travel a lot and are always inspired by our flea market and vintage finds. Right now we’re loving everything Moroccan and ekat. We grew up near the beach so we’ve always been inspired by surf culture and it’s effortlessly cool vibe.
Funnest event you have done? We loved our trippy/cosmic SS11 event at Tyrone Wood’s SCREAM gallery in Mayfair, London. It was really fun to throw an event across the pond and see how well received the collection was there.
Style icon? Right now we’re loving Rosie Huntington Whitely, but Kate Moss and Bridgette Bardot are still pretty fucking raddd
