Interview from Paris….photographer Sonia Sieff

I’d like to introduce the incredible Sonia Sieff, daughter of world famous French photographer Jeanloup Sieff (his numerous monographs sit on bookshelves at my parent’s home library). Sonia is for me one of the freshest photographer’s out there today. I love the way her lens captures women’s personalities showing us their vulnerability and sensuality. We talk fashion, photography, her inspirations, travel and Paris…

Tell us a bit about yourself? Childhood, growing up….
Well, I grew up in a quite amazing family with a dad photographer and an intellectual and a German mother who was model. And they met… in a studio!

How much did your father influence you and your work?(you can see some of his work  below)
He influenced me first as a human being. In everything, taste, humour, character..

Left bank or right bank?
Both, I live on the Right Bank but I cross the river every day. Love the 5th, 6th and 7th.

Francoise Hardy or Brigite Bardot?

Francoise Hardy for her elegance, BB for her “parfum de scandale”.

Just saw your pictures that you did for Vionnet fall 2011 collection (they are on my blog in the designer’s section) … they are beautiful…..tell us a bit more about this collaboration?
I started working with them in September 2010. I love their clothes, fabrics, shape, very feminine. And above all, Madeleine Vionnet was a strong personality who I admire.

What influences most your work?
Paintings, traveling, books, dreams…

What kind of woman do you like to photograph?
Strong personalities for sure, women who have something to express / to hide, something between charisma and mystery.

Favourite shoot?

The one I am preparing..

What camera do you work with?
Hasselblad, Canon.

Describe your style( fashion)?
I love it, but it takes time. It is a real full time job! So sometimes I dress up, but everyday I wear basics.
When I do dress up, it can be a dress by Balenciaga or Alaia and a piece of Aurelie Bidermann’s jewelry.

Favourite designers?
Nicolas Ghesquiere for Balenciaga, Phoebe Philo for Celine, Proenza Schouler, Miuccia Prada for Miu Miu.

Fashion faux pas?

When you go to a party and every girls look the same, wearing the look of the season! Boring.

Favourite Paris spots- restaurants, bars, clubs, stores?
A restaurant: Le Dauphin (inaki)/ Le Derrière
A bar: Le Mathis (not new but an institution)
A club: nothing new in Paris..
A store: Merci / Heimstone

Up and coming projects?
A book. A short movie.

Ultimate goal?
Spend time to travel around the world.

What would be your dream project?

Work for a long period on a project (book, film, collaboration with a brand). I don’t like brief collaborations..

Summer holidays are spent….?
Greece has so many wonderful hidden islands, Aeolian islands in Italy  for their 50′s spirit and amazing food, US east or west coast for the landscapes.

Winter holidays are spent…?

Verbier in Switzerland.

If you had to live anywhere else apart from Paris where would that be and why?
New York, and somewhere near the sea. Brazil?
